A Lecture by German curator Kathrin Rhomberg: Characteristics of contemporary: A new era?

Among other significant international art events, Kathrin Rhomberg has curated the 6th Berlin Biennale and while in Bangalore will give us her views on current trends in contemporary art and curatorial practice. Ms. Rhomberg is in India to attend the Curator's Hub in Kolkata and we are honoured that she agreed to make a brief stopover to address the art community in Bangalore.

For about a year now, photographer Mahesh Shantaram and book designer Vidya Rao have promoted appreciation for photobooks through their Open House library sessions.

On one or two Sundays a month, members are invited spend a few relaxed hours in the residential library. The Bangalore Weekend of Photobooks will open that collection to a larger audience of photography and book lovers in the city. Come and get immersed in a weekend full of activities centered around the magnificent world of photobooks.

Madhusmita Mohanty | Odissi Dance - Friday 26th @ 20.00

A dancer characterized by supple and graceful body movements, Madhusmita’s expressions and footwork synchronize to create an aesthetically gratifying experience. Initiated into dance at the age of six, she became an accomplished dancer under Orissa Dance Academy, and is now a senior teacher and Assistant Director of the institution.

She has performed at the Orissa Society of Americas Convention, USA and has also been to Thailand, China, Malaysia, and many European countries. Madhusmita is a recipient of Senior National Scholarship, the Sringarmani title from Sur Sringar Samsad, Mumbai, Deba Prasad Dash Memorial Fellowship 1997-98 and an empanelled artiste of ICCR. She is also the recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar award from the Government of India in the year 2008.

The cast and crew are putting together a silly sex comedy titled, Nothing On - a single-set farce in which sardines fly, lovers frolic, doors slam, clothes are tossed away, and embarrassing hi-jinks ensue. The three acts of Noises Off expose different phases of the disastrous show.

How to Skin a Giraffe is Perch’s second collaboration with the Bangalore based theatre group Rafiki. The play is directed by Rajiv Krishnan.

The play How to Skin a Giraffe is inspired by the play "Leonce and Lena" by the iconic German Playwright, Georg Büchner (1813 – 1837). The play is supported by the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai and will premiere at Ranga Shankara.

The Tasveer Foundation invites you to a lecture by Annapurna Garimella Wednesday, 3rd July at 6:00pm National Gallery of Modern Art Manekyavelu Mansion 49 Palace Road Bengaluru – 560 052   Gond art today is a thriving vernacular art form; it represents, sometimes paradoxically, both contemporariness and aboriginality. An art form that had no modern history prior to the 1970s, when the artist Jangarh Singh Shyam (1960 - 2001) began painting, today, has a large group of extremely talented practitioners whose work is shown and bought not only in India but across the world. Garimella, in this lecture, will trace the history of Gond painting largely through the career and the work of Jangarh Singh Shyam, as well as the group of artists who trained and assisted him, and today have become prominent in their own right. She will also touch on  the larger politics of the art world today in which art is termed "tribal," "modern," "contemporary," etc. and will examine how Gond painting and sculpture challenge such categories. Dr. Annapurna Garimella is a Bangalore-based designer and an art historian who focuses on the art and architecture of India. She heads Jackfruit, an organization with a specialized portfolio of design, research and curatorial projects for artists, museums, government and private institutions and non-profits. She is also the Founding and Managing Trustee of Art, Resources and Teaching Trust, a not-for-profit organization that runs a public art library, conducts independent research projects and does teaching and advisement for college and university students and the general public. She was the former Research Editor and Advisory Board Member for Marg Publications and is currently on the board of the S N School of Art and Communication, University of Hyderabad and the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru. Her work focuses on late medieval Indic architecture and the history and practices of vernacular art forms in India after Independence. Her most recent curatorial projects include Vernacular, in the Contemporary (Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi) and Faith: Manu Parekh in Benaras 1980-2012 (Art Alive, New Delhi).
