Germans who spend time in India are surprisingly often approached to talk about 'the Mercedes' - even when the traveller is quite ignorant about cars and often not as well informed about the issue as the interlocutor from the other end of the world. As much as this may please the car company in Sindelfingen - the consequences and implications of this associative link are too labyrinthine and complex to be dealt with simply looking at the number of cars sold in the respective countries.

This is precisely the subject of the documentary Star Biz. Using the Mercedes as a 'symbol', this hyper-realistic documentary examines the process of cultural appropriation of Western consumer and luxury goods in India. The German car industry and the Indian film industry meet in the heat of Bombay traffic and in the cold of a Berlin winter: the entertaining, critical and insightful encounter of two giants.

Archana Shah | Textile Traditions of Kutch - Thursday 19th @ 18.00

The Tasveer Foundation invites you to a lecture by Archana Shah
Thursday, 19th September at 6:00pm

National Gallery of Modern Art
Manekyavelu Mansion
49 Palace Road
Bengaluru – 560 052

The exquisite fabrics of Kutch were legendary and widely traded as far back as the time of the Indus Valley Civilization, some 5000 years ago. Through the centuries, the ancient techniques of dyeing, weaving and printing continued to flourish there, and clothing played a key role in defining the identity of the various communities in Kutch. Weaving together history and legend, as well as myths, mores and miracles, Archana Shah, in this lecture, will offer glimpses of the unique culture and craft practices of the people of Kutch, as well as their food and homes, and particularly their ancient textile traditions, all of which are closely connected with one another and with the vast, arid landscape of the region. This lecture will also explore the traditional self-sustaining ways of life of the people of Kutch, their values and world view, which has taught them to conserve their environment and precious resources; it will also touch on the unrestrained ‘development’ of the region, which has upset the ecological balance and created deep fissures in what was once a harmoniously integrated society.

Archana Shah graduated from the National Institute of Design (NID) in 1980. Early in her career, she travelled to remote corners of the country to study, understand and experience the vast variety of weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidery and ornamentation techniques practised by different communities. Their distinctive colour palettes, and rich design vocabulary became the base for all her future work. In 1985, Shah started a clothing company, Bandhej, a label created for Indian women, with an Indian sensibility. Today, Bandhej is a recognised brand, with stores in six other cities in India. Shah has also designed costumes for films and theatre and architectural textile installations for Festival of India inaugurations at Paris, Moscow, Leningrad and Tashkent. Her book on Kutch, Shifting Sands has just been published.

We request you to be seated 10 minutes before the lecture.

Burning Deck - Saturday 7th @ 21.00

CounterCulture BangaloreWhat began as a sole home grown bedroom project now has turned into a fully grown dark ambient/ down tempo outfit. Meet Bangalore lads Sandeep madhavan and Floyd Santimano   who has taken up the burden of delivering some deep underground electronic music fused with 70’s progressive rock and jazz. They extract their influences from musicians like Massive Attack, Portishead, Trent Reznor, Bjork, Cinematic Orchestra, Mute Math, Gentle Giant and Can. Sounds weird yeah? Well to witness this utter weirdness, you need to witness them. Their debut album titled as  ‘kalinihta’ is out already, pick up a copy and give it a listen in utter loneliness, you will get the taste of that ‘weirdness’ I am talking about. The band is a few live gigs old and according to them – ‘the energy, anticipation and improvisation that goes with a live performance is hard to achieve anywhere else.’

Dear Liar - Thursday 5th @ 19.30

DEAR LIAR”, when first written, (or rather compiled and edited) created a form for playwriting which has been much emulated since. The form is one of straightforward narration of the events rather than a recreation of them.
The events in this case are the ones that accompanied the intense relationship between George Bernard Shaw and Stella Campbell (a famous actress of the time) and which found expression in “the hundreds of letters they wrote to one another over the years…” The play chronicles not only their deep mutual admiration and love (despite both of them being married, and not to each other!) but also that very significant era of history (1895 to 1939) which was witness not only to innumerable path breaking accomplishments in the theatre, but also to both the World Wars and the end of the Edwardian era, and with it, that particular way of life so dear to people like Mrs. Campbell. Mr. Shaw survived it all, long enough to even write about it but not Mrs. Campbell, who died in 1939, alone, broken and virtually penniless.
The play is self-explanatory, but a few words to explain the nature of the performance: the characters in the play are an Actor and an Actress who portray the two “protagonists”. The playwright specifically states that no attempt should be made to make physically resemble Shaw and Campbell, neither should there be a realistic setting. Since the play covers a time-span of almost 40 years and the action takes place in very many different locations, these people and places are not to be “re-created physically” but only  “represented” The re-creation can take place in the audience’s mind.
